My introduction to chess began at the tender age of 5, thanks to my Dad. I remember him taking me to places such as Washington Square Park in New York City to play chess against stronger opponents. Eventually, my skills sharpened, leading to my first victory over my Dad at the Chess Forum in the West Village. I also tried out for the chess team at my elementary school and earned a coveted spot on the team, marking the beginning of my competitive chess journey. The team traveled to tournaments throughout New York State and other states, which were exhilarating and further fueled my love for the game.
One of the lessons my Dad always talks about is the parallel between chess and life and how the pieces work together to create balance and harmony. I like to think about how the pieces represent different parts of life. For instance, the pawn is like starting life out, because of how it starts off as vulnerable, but can transform into a queen, the most powerful piece on the chess board. The other pieces such as the knight, bishop, and rook are all pieces of your life that are important, such as health, security and social connections. The king is you, and it always needs to be protected.
As a high school student now, I’m beginning to truly understand the life lessons related to chess. Allow me to share with you my life’s journey through chess.
